From ชื่อ (chʉ̂ʉ, “name”) + สกุล (sà-gun, “family”); perhaps calque of English family name.
Probably first used on 22 March 2455 BE (1913 CE), when the Family Names Act 1913 (พระราชบัญญัติขนานนามสกุล พระพุทธศักราช ๒๔๕๖) was promulgated.
