From Pali sambhāra (literally “to bring together”) or Sanskrit सम्भार (sambhāra, literally “to bring together; to collect”); perhaps via Old Khmer saṃbhāra, °saṃmbhāra (“conditions prerequisite to enlightenment, especially the accumulation of merit; collection, accumulation; provision, materials, necessaries, requisites, equipment; property, wealth; etc”). Cognate with Thai สัมภาระ (sǎm-paa-rá); Modern Khmer សម្ភារ (sɑmphiə).
