From Proto-Tai *ŋɯəkᴰ (“crocodile”), from Middle Chinese 鱷 (MC ŋɑk̚, “crocodile”). Cognate with Lao ເງືອກ (ngư̄ak), Shan ငိူၵ်ႈ (ngōek), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (nguek).
