Uncertain. Probably from Old Khmer eṅa, eṅ (“self; oneself; own; personally”).

Compare Modern Khmer ឯង (ʾaeng, “you; self, oneself; etc”); Proto-Vietic *ʔɛːŋ; Vietnamese anh (“you”).

Perhaps cognate with Thai เอง (eeng).
