Etymology 1
Sandhi of 打ち (buchi, “hitting”), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 打つ (butsu, “to hit, to strike”).[1][2]
The buchi- becomes bun- when prefixing a verb that starts with an n or m sound.
