From 大腹餅 (だいふくもち, daifuku mochi, “big stomach mochi (“very filling mochi”)”), by replacing 腹 (ふく, fuku, “stomach”) by homophone 福 (ふく, fuku, “luck”).
Previously 腹太餅 (はらぶともち, harabuto mochi (“very filling mochi”), “stomach fat mochi”).[1]
