From Old Japanese, first attested in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE).

Originally a compound of  (ひと) (hito, man, person) + (to, combining particle) +  () (nari, the  (れん) (よう) (けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb  () (naru, to become).).[1][2]

The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 為人.
