Etymology
From Old Japanese, first attested in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE).
Originally a compound of 人 (hito, “man, person”) + と (to, combining particle) + 為り (nari, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 為る (naru, “to become”).).[1][2]
The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 為人.
