Etymology

Unknown, perhaps from Sogdian [script needed] (s'rtp'w, leader of caravan; caravaneer), which is an Irano-Indian hybrid from Sanskrit सार्थ (sārtha, caravan) + Old Persian [script needed] (*pāvā, protector). Compare Sanskrit सार्थवाह (sārthavāha, merchant; trader; leader or conductor of a caravan).

Compare Uyghur [script needed] (sartpau, leader of a group of merchants), Tibetan སར་ཕག (sar phag), Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎱𐎠𐎺𐎠 (xšaçapāvā, satrap; governor of a Persian province).
