Etymology
Unknown, perhaps from Sogdian [script needed] (s'rtp'w, “leader of caravan; caravaneer”), which is an Irano-Indian hybrid from Sanskrit सार्थ (sārtha, “caravan”) + Old Persian [script needed] (*pāvā, “protector”). Compare Sanskrit सार्थवाह (sārthavāha, “merchant; trader; leader or conductor of a caravan”).
Compare Uyghur [script needed] (sartpau, “leader of a group of merchants”), Tibetan སར་ཕག (sar phag), Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎱𐎠𐎺𐎠 (xšaçapāvā, “satrap; governor of a Persian province”).
