Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 며느리. Also attested in the Worin cheongangjigok (月印千江之曲 / 월인천강지곡), 1449 as connective form 며ᄂᆞᆯㅇ— (myenolG-) (cf. 며느라기 (myenuraki) attested in Cheongguyeongeon (靑丘永言 / 청구영언) , 1728).

May be compound of 뫼 (moy) (→ 메 (me, “cooked rice”)) + 나ᄅᆞ— (naro-) (→ 나르— (nareu-, “to carry”)） + —이 (-i, “suffix deriving a noun”).
