Etymology

From (sat, “gap”) + (sat, “gap”) + (i, adverbial suffix), literally "gap by gap; everywhere". Compare similar derivations of 낱낱이 (nannachi, “one by one”), 곳곳이 (gotgosi, “everywhere”), 몫몫이 (mongmoksi, “share by share; every share”), 앞앞이 (apapi, “before each person; each”), 집집이 (jipjibi, “house by house”).

th-final of the second syllable undergoes regular palatalisation when followed by suffix (i); compare 같이 (gachi).
