Ultimately from a lost common noun (vila, agro, castro, busto vel sim) and the name of a 5th-10th centuries landowner, Late Latin Ansimundi, genitive of Ansimundus;[1] from a Suevic and/or Gothic personal name, from Proto-Germanic *Ansumundaz, from *ansuz (“deity”) + *mundaz (“protection”).[2]
