Etymology

Borrowed from Latin Austria, a latinized version of Germanic ostar (eastern) (< Proto-Germanic *austraz (eastern); cf. also Latvian austrumi (east)), in reference to this land being the Marchia austriaca (eastern borderland). The word was adapted to Latvian spelling ( + -ija).
