Latvian
Etymology
Borrowed from Latin Austria, a latinized version of Germanic ostar (“eastern”) (< Proto-Germanic *austraz (“eastern”); cf. also Latvian austrumi (“east”)), in reference to this land being the Marchia austriaca (“eastern borderland”). The word was adapted to Latvian spelling ( + -ija).
