Mazandaran

Borrowed from Persian مازندران‎ (mâzandarân, literally “the gate or the valley of the giants”) from مازن‎ (mâzan) +‎ در‎ (dar) +‎ ـان‎ (ân), from Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬌𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬀‎ (mazainiia, “giant”). The name has been used in Shahnameh to refer to a land inhabited by divs (daevas) and sorcerers and is difficult to conquer. On the other hand, after Muslim invasion of Persia, the region of Tabaristan remained unconquered for a relatively long period of time, which was later called (and mistaken for) Mazandaran.
