Cognate with *mālos (praise). Possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *meldʰ- (Proto-Germanic *melþōną (inform), Proto-Slavic *modliti (ask, pray), Old Armenian մաղթեմ (małtʿem, implore, pray)), though the loss of the is problematic.
