Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *śarwe (often also reconstructed as *śorwa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥wa, ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂-. Cognates within Uralic include Proto-Samic *čoarvē, Hungarian szarv. Doublet of *hirvi, *hirvas.
