From Proto-Indo-European *h₂énh₂ts (“duck”). Cognate with Latin anas (“duck, drake”), Lithuanian ántis (“duck, mallard”), Proto-Slavic *ǫty (“duck”) and possibly Old Armenian անիդ (anid).
