Alternative etymology derives *breh-, from Proto-Indo-European *mrekʷ-, *merǝkʷ-, *merǝgʷ- (to shimmer). If so, then cognate with Lithuanian mirkčioti (to blink, flicker, wink, twinkle, shimmer, sparkle), Russian моргать (morgatʹ, to blink, wink).
