Proto-Germanic
Etymology
Kroonen suggests Proto-Indo-European *pelth₂- (“field, plain”), though the normal form of this root is *pleth₂- (“flat”).[1] LIN prefers to derive this from *pelh₂-, the schwebeablaut form of *pleh₂- (“flat”).[2]
