Proto-Italic
Etymology
Possibly an i-stem derivation of the Proto-Indo-European root *(s)kleh₂w- (“nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors”). Possibly *(s)kleh₂w- gave *klāwos, Latin clāvus; alternatively the Latin clāvis may have been borrowed from Ancient Greek κλείς (kleís), ultimately from the same Indo-European source.
