Proto-Slavic
Etymology
O-stem derivative of the consonant stem Proto-Indo-European *h₂ébōl, *h₂ébl̥, parallel to the form with an *-u- enlargement *ablъko. Relation of *ablo to the original consonant-stem is reminiscent of the relation of *bratrъ to PIE *bʰréh₂tēr.
Baltic cognates are Lithuanian obuolỹs, Latvian ābols and Old Prussian woble.
