From Proto-Balto-Slavic *budras, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰros, from *bʰewdʰ-. Morphologically *bъd- + *-rъ.
Cognate with Lithuanian budrùs (“vigilant”), Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬌𐬠𐬎𐬛𐬭𐬀 (zaēnibudra)
