Cognate with Latvian barĩba (food), Latin far n (flour) and fārīna f (flour), English barley, Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐍂𐌹𐌶𐌴𐌹𐌽𐍃 (barizeins, barley, adjective), Old Norse barr m (grain), Old Irish bairgen f (bread, loaf), Welsh bara (bread).
