From Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (“to divide, to distribute, to account”)[1]. Cognate (via ablaut) with Latvian dalīt (“to divide”), Lithuanian dalýti, Sanskrit दलति (dalati, “to burst”), Proto-Germanic *taljaną (“to account”).
