Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dwára, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰwórom (enclosure, courtyard, i.e. something enclosed by the door), from the same Proto-Indo-European nominal root *dʰwer- (door, gate) that also gave *dvьrь.

Cognate with Latin forum, Sanskrit द्वार (dvā́ra).
