Etymology
There are two theories of origin:
- From Proto-Indo-European *kelH- (“to rise, raise, lift”).
- From Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to turn, rotate”).
Morphologically, the term was formed via **kol- + *-ěno, where **kol- was derived from one of the mentioned options.
Cognate with Lithuanian kẽlis (“knee”) and Latvian celis (“knee”).
