From Proto-Balto-Slavic *māˀs-, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂s-, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂- (“to beckon”). Baltic cognates include Lithuanian mosúoti (“to wave”). See *majati (“to wave, to beckon”) for more.
