Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From *on- + *uťa, from *uti + *-ja, from Proto-Indo-European.

  • Derksen: *on- is often assumed to be the o-grade of *h₁n (in). This hypothesis is supported by Slovene dial. vnúča < *vъn-. See also *ǫtrь.
  • Černyx: probably *ob- + *vъn-. Compare Russian нутро (nutro) < *vъn- + *ǫtro.
  • ЭССЯ, Vasmer: *on- is from *an-.
