Etymology

From earlier *skubti, reflecting Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewbʰ-. Cognate with Lithuanian skùbti (to hurry) and akin to Latvian skubināt (to urge, to push), Proto-Germanic *skeubaną (to shove), Persian آشفتن (âšoftan, to agitate), Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣubhyati, to shake). Further related to be Albanian humb (to get lost) via a nasal infix.
