Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *solʔdus + *-kъ. Cognate with Lithuanian saldùs and Latvian salds.
Balto-Slavic word is derived from the Proto-Indo-European *sh₂el-d-u-, extended form of *sh₂el-, *seh₂l- (“salt”) (whence also *solь (“salt”)). The original meaning of the Balto-Slavic word was thus "salty; tasty, delicious; spicy".
