Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vartýti (to turn), Latvian vā̀rtît (to turn), Old Prussian wartint (to turn). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit वर्तयति (vartáyati, to turn), Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (frawardjan, to corrupt).
