Etymology
From Old High German rocko, from Proto-Germanic *rugiz, from Proto-Indo-European *wrugʰyo-. The older and expected form is archaic Rocken; the modern consonantism through German Low German influence. Cognate with Dutch rogge, Low German Rogg, Old Norse rugr (Danish rug, Swedish råg), English rye, Russian рожь (rozh') and Latvian rudzi.
