From Middle High German sōt, from Old High German *soud, *sōd, from Proto-Germanic *sauþaz (“well, pit”). Cognate with German Low German Sood, English seath, Norwegian saud, Gothic 𐍃𐌰𐌿𐌸𐍃 (sauþs).
