aħħar

Maltese

Etymology

From Arabic آخِر (ʾāḵir) with irregular gemination, perhaps after ewwel (first).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈaħ.ħar/

Adjective

aħħar (feminine singular aħħarija, plural aħħarin)

  1. last
X’tagħmel jekk din tkun l-aħħar ġurnata ta’ ħajtek?
What would you do if this were the last day of your life?

Usage notes

  • The adjective is prepositioned, as above, and remains invariable. The declined forms are rare. They are only used without a following noun, as in: Din hija l-aħħarija. (This is the last one.) Even in this case, however, one would normally say: Din hija l-aħħar waħda.

Noun

aħħar m

  1. end
    Synonym: tmiem
