ewwel (feminine singular ewwelija, plural ewwelin)

1. first (of a series or order, before second and third)

   Din kienet l-ewwel darba li kont barra minn Malta.

   This was the first time I was away from Malta.

• The adjective is prepositioned, as above, and remains invariable. The declined forms are rare. They are only used without a following noun, as in: Din hija l-ewwelija. (“This is the first one.”) Even in this case, however, one would normally say: Din hija l-ewwel waħda.
