From Vulgar Latin *acūcla (“needle”, root)[1] < *acūcula, hypothetical diminutive of Latin acus (“needle”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ-. Compare the doublet aguglia, taken from Old Occitan.
