From Middle High German ar(e)beiten, from Old High German ar(a)beiten (to toil, work hard), from Proto-Germanic *arbaidijaną, equivalent to arbat + -an. Cognate with German arbeiten, Dutch arbeiden, Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌱𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (arbaidjan).
