From Proto-Germanic *biþankijaną, equivalent to be- + þenċan. Cognate with Old Saxon bithenkian, Old Frisian bithanka, Old High German bidenken (German bedenken), Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌲𐌺𐌾𐌰𐌽 (biþagkjan).
