From Proto-Mon-Khmer *k(oo)k (“a kind of diving bird”), arbitrary variant of Proto-Mon-Khmer *ku(ə)k (“egret (?)”)[1], from Proto-Austroasiatic *kok "heron, fishing bird".[2]
