From Proto-Baltic *kyau-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeu-, *keu- (“to shine; light; bright”), with an added suffix *-no. Cognates include Lithuanian kiáunė, dialectal kiaunė̃, Old Prussian caune ([kaune]) (compare dialectal Latvian caune), Proto-Slavic *kuna (Russian куни́ца (kuníca), dialectal куна́ (kuná), Czech kuna).[1]
