From Proto-Germanic *kaldaz, participle form of *kalaną (“to be cold”), from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (“to be cold, freeze”). Cognate with Old Frisian kald (West Frisian kâld), Old Saxon kald (Low German kold), Dutch koud, Old High German kalt (German kalt), Old Norse kaldr (Danish kold, Swedish kall), Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌻𐌳𐍃 (kalds).
