From Proto-Vietic *ʔa-cɔːʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cɔʔ (dog); cognate with Semai co (dog, servant, slave), Halang chô (dog), Pacoh acho (dog), Khmu [sɔʔ] and Mang [θɔː¹]. Compare also Khmer (cɑɑ, Year of the Dog).
