denaturat

See also: dénaturât

Polish

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /dɛ.naˈtu.rat/

Noun

denaturat m inan

  1. denatured alcohol; concentrated alcohol that was rendered unfit for human consumption by the addition of a denaturing agent and is thus exempt from excise tax

Usage notes

Denatured alcohol available on sale in Poland typically contains denatonium rather than toxic substances such as methanol as is thus extremely bitter, but non-toxic. The drinking of denaturat is strongly associated with severe alcoholism and homelessness. Popular beliefs also associate drinking it with a risk of blindness, due to the use of methanol as the denaturing agent in the past.
