descăleca

Romanian

Alternative forms

  • descălica

Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin *discaballicāre, from dis- + Late Latin caballicāre, from Latin caballus (horse), or from des- + (în)căleca. Compare Aromanian discalic, discãlicari, Catalan descavalcar, Middle French deschevaucher, Portuguese descavalgar, Spanish descabalgar, compare also Albanian shkalkoj. The second sense of settling and populating may have been influenced by a migratory or nomadic Central Asian people that entered lands occupied by Romanians, as a similar meaning of choosing a place to set up and live temporarily exists in some Turanian cultures for the term 'dismount'.
