Once thought to be a loanword from Latin vocābulum (appellation, designation), but more likely a native word from Proto-Celtic *woxtlom (compare Welsh gwaethl (argument)), from Proto-Indo-European *wokʷtlom (compare Sanskrit वक्त्र (vaktrá, mouth)), from *wekʷ- (to speak).[1]
