From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʿala r-rīqi, on an empty stomach). Equivalent to għal (on) + ir-riq (the saliva), literally on the saliva. Compare Moroccan Arabic عالريق (ʕar-rīq) and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ)
