Etymology
From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʿala r-rīqi, “on an empty stomach”). Equivalent to għal (“on”) + ir-riq (“the saliva”), literally “on the saliva”. Compare Moroccan Arabic عالريق (ʕar-rīq) and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ)
