Etymology

From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ‎ (ʿala r-rīqi, “on an empty stomach”). Equivalent to għal (“on”) +‎ ir-riq (“the saliva”), literally “on the saliva”. Compare Moroccan Arabic عالريق‎ (ʕar-rīq) and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق‎ (ʕar-rāyeʔ)
