Etymology

From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʿala r-rīqi, on an empty stomach). Equivalent to على (ʕla, on) + الريق (er-rīq, the saliva), literally on the saliva. Compare Maltese għar-riq and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ)
