From Proto-Slavic *gody, plural of *godъ (“proper time, holiday”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰedʰ- (“to unite, be associated, suit”). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic годъ (godŭ, “pleasing time”), Lithuanian guõdas (“honor”), Proto-Germanic *gōdaz (“good”), *gadōną (“to fit, hold together”).
