From Old Norse kœfa, whence also Faroese køva, Norwegian Nynorsk kjøve. Compare the Icelandic form kvæfa, Norwegian kvæve, Icelandic kvefja, obsolete Icelandic kvefja, Norwegian kveve, Swedish kväva (older form kvävja).
