laai
Afrikaans
Dutch
Etymology
From Middle Dutch laeye. Further origin unsettled. It could be from an unattested Old Frisian term, from Proto-Germanic *laugijaz, and thus a cognate of Old English līeġ, Old High German loug and Old Norse leygr. Compare also German Lohe (“flame”), an ablaut variant of the latter two.
