Probably from lágrima, with the suffix -ear. Cf. also lagrimar. Compare Romance cognates with a similar infix from Latin *-idio, *-idiare: Portuguese lacrimejar, Catalan llagrimejar, Occitan lagremejar, dialectal Italian lacrimeggiare, French larmoyer, Romanian lăcrima, lăcrimează.
